And even an outsider would be touched at the silent spontneous demonstration of devotion visible in the little altars erected along the route of the procession by the converts in front of their humble dwellings showing that Catholicism has taken root in the hearts of these simple people And is thus congenial to the Indian soil. [...] But he should not be content with contemplating the beauty of the ocean of the mountains and of the clouds the masterpieces of the artists and the poets the majestic constructions of philsophical thought the mathematical formulas which express natural laws. [...] The explicitation of the chaotic possibility of the world is the work of the One attributed to his tapas. [...] The elements of the conflict are unmistakable : the growth of industry and the surprising discoveries of science ; the changed relations of masters and workmen ; the enomous fortunes of individdils and the poverty of the masses ; the increased self-reliance and the closer mutual combination of the working population ; and finally a general moral detrioration. [...] And to this must be added the custom of working by contract and the concentration of so many branches of trade in the hands of a few individuals so that a small number of very rich men have been able to lay upon the masses of the poor a yoke little better than slavery itself." (Reruns Novarum 1 & 2) 2. Similar and even worse is the condition of the workmen in the Colonies.
