The Light of the East August 1937

1937

For the first characteristic of the doctrine of the Assumption is that it is not a dogma painfully ascertained by the leaders of the Church through the reading of Scripture or history or logically deduced by their theologians from some more fundamental Catholic doctrine and imposed by them as a dogma of faith on the Catholic masses. [...] The fact is that the most striking charateristics of `religious experience '—as described 141 THE LIGHT OF THE EAST as certain because of the universal belief in it of the whole Christian people—the people that also shares in the guidance of the Divine Spirit. [...] This is the era of fredom To the rule of men succeeds the rule of reality " : society is reduced to the real reltions of production and all the superstructures are absorbed—including the State. [...] The waves that morning rose mountain high and flowed over the rocky islands that dot the sea ; sometimes two giant waves one from the Arabian Sea and the other from the Bay of Bengal would meet far out in the Indian Ocean and for an instant a jet of water would shoot up to the sky caused by the impact of the waves. [...] What scandalizes and shocks the free thiners in Christianity is that God in order to manifest His love seized upon the flesh which is the instrument of error and evil and turned it into a means to sanctify and illuminate the intellect ; that he used the weaker instrument for the redemption of the stronger saving the spirit through the flesh the invisible through the visible.
