The reason for this they would have explained is that God through Christ has confided to the Church founded upon Peter and the other Apostles —and to no one else on earth—His revelation of the supernatural goal which He intends for us and of the way that leads to that goal and also the graces which arc needed in order to enter that way and to follow it rsolutely to the end. The Third General Council that of Ephesus (431) calls Pope Celestine. " the guardian of the faith " who teaches right doctrine because he is the " successor of Blessed Peter the Apostle the Head of the whole faith and the Head of the Apostles." In the Fourth General Council at Chalcedon (45 I) the bishops assembled in council several times call Pope St Leo the reigning Successor of Pe [...] The philosopher failed to integrate in his system the evidence accumulated by the scientist with the result that the latter grew diffident of the ability of the former while at the same time developing a distaste for philosophical specultions.
