The Light of the East January 1943

We are not like the lilies of the field or the birds of the air or the beasts of the earth creatures entirely shaped by irresistible instincts and compelling circumstances. [...] The layman I repeat must not seek the sanctity of the monk nor the monk the sanctity of the missioary. [...] But the indictment of the Christian Churches becomes more impressive still if returning to the original object of these articles we extend our survey beyond the boundaries of Catholcism and review the omissions and comissions of other Christian denominations with regard to the problem of peace and war. [...] It supposes that in the countries at war the great voice of the Vatican does not reach the Catholic mases and that the cause of this is the discordant sound of the nearer voices of the Catholic Bishops. [...] The greatness of that form of collectivity which is a nation will be estimated therefore by the way in which it helps man to increase in stature to raise himself up to God ; in facilitating the expansion of his powers ; in responding to the necessities of his material life ; in permitting him the realization of his religious aspirations.
