1943

One might thus sum up in a very few words the causes which led to the icredulity of the two classes of the ancient world which one might have expected to welcome the Gospel most warmly : the Jews who for centuries had been provdentially prepared for the advent of a final revelation and the 'Greeks' the learned the well-to-do the 'civilised' among the Gentiles. [...] And the Getiles by refusing to follow the guidance of their reason and conscience had wifully dimmed or put out the lights which the God of nature had placed in their very soul to lead them one day to the realiation of their need of the God of grace.
