In November 1944 in a speech reported by The Statesman the Pro-vice Chancellor of Benares Hindu University spoke of the common origin of religions in the effort of man seeking his own divinity through the inherent identity of the human soul with the life universal ". That may be the origin of the Advaita ; but is it the origin of Judaism Christianity Islam and even the bhakti cults ? the Azte [...] The never-resing change of things c— birth and death the regular repetitions of day and night the chaning phases of the yearly seasons with periods of sowing ripening and harvesting — the deadly inertness of the soil the constellations of the stars in particular the cycle of the waxing and waning moon all these things challenge the instinctive Iinquisitiveness of the human mind and de [...] Again the mysterious structure of the indvidual things the polar position and balance of attracting and repelling powers the order of things in grades and various stages of perfection the strained but wonderfully balanced harmony of the universe present a strong urge to the human mind to rise from the lower level of the material world to the higher plane of the plant and animal life and f [...] Their declaration couched in the humblest of terms (11) * reads in part as follows: "We promise to fol ow throughout and in detail whatever is contained in all the acts of the Council of Chalcedon and of the other synods aforesaid in accordance with what was written in the four synod in common agreement with the legates and e voys of the Apostolic See (in whom on each occasi n the blessed Popes [...] And we promise that we will in all things follow and observe also the letters of Pope Leo of blessed memory and the consttutions of the Apostolic See that have been published whether as to the Faith or as to the confirmation of the aforesaid Councils.
