Since those days in the early years of the sixteenth century the Sultans of Turkey have been accepted as the head of the Sunni Moslems and the representative of Islamic power and culture in the comity of nations: Under their leadership Islam had dreamt of carrying the standard of its victor LOIN faith into the heart of Christendom till it was beaten back from before the ramparts of Vienna by John [...] And it may be that the present suppression of the Khilafat has been moved by the feeling that the Sultans of Turkey have not proved themselves capable guarians of the honour and dignity of the faith ; and in response to the modern condition of things and demands of this demtcratic age a change should be made in the ilersoality of the leadership of the Islamic o*atenay.
