Leave the car at mile 17i and climb straight up making for the crest of the ridge a little to the right of the right hand (which is the higher) peak deciding upon one of the ravines which score the crags to take you up the steep last thousand feet or so. [...] The selection of the correct ravine with the inevitable doubts of its practicability is half the fun of the climb. [...] Offerings to the deity of the river are made in the form of cocoanuts and coins which are thrown into the waters ; and after performing certain rites on the banks the pilgrims go to the shrine of Vithoba for Darshan—the sole aim othe expedition. [...] I looked out over the rice fields which rippled: like a many coloured sea under the gentle wind the beautiful feathery leaves of the palms were sharp cut against the sky while from behind the dar and wavy line of the distant mountains a golde flush heralded the coming of the sun. [...] The hook is passed through the mouth and gills then through a portion of the side at the latter third of the body point upwards ; the eye of the hook is tied to the body with strong white thread by means of a needle passed through on either side of the backbone ; the mouth is sewn up to leave the rustless steel trace in the centre of the lips.
