Tibet DURING the last fortnight there has been heard a cry of distress from distant Tibet which has now appealed to the nations of the world and to the Presdent of the United States in particular for protection against the threat now offered to their freedom and independence by the onrush of the flood of Communism which already has submerged two-thirds of the vast area of China and is overfl [...] religious outlook of Tibet and the philosophic materiaism of agricultural China." The impact of Commnism with its gross materialism and negation of the things of the spirit on the simple and austere religious faith of the half-nomad Tibetan peasant can have only one of two results. [...] Sir Bertram Stevens' words need to be quoted in full: Technically Australia has every legal right under the terms of the International Wheat Agreement which virtually fixes the price in terms of the Canadian dolar to raise the price of wheat to Asian countries; but the exercise of that right would in my view he against the spirit of the Agreement. [...] The change regarding wheat is the substitution of the Government wholesale issue rate for the free market rate at Hapur whereas in the case of sugar the market rate has been replaced by the scheduled price at which the dealers are required to sell to the Government. [...] The allocations will be made in the form of grants to the Netherlands on behalf of Indonesia to finance the purchase of food stuffs textiles and other urgently-needed consumer goods for the remainder of this calendar year.
