Menzies had to win his success on these larger issues in the face of his failure to keep down inflation and the cost of living which the opposition rightly criticised was the essence of the situation; it reflects accurately the split in the British Labour party on identical issues on which there has n nv been the realisation that the larger must overrule the smaller. [...] There is probably some element of exaggertion in posing the choice of alternatives as one between the cost of survival and the cost of living but this is substantially the issue btween the Right and the Left in the present world context. [...] Jayakar speaking as a jurist with the ripeness of political experience and knowledge of constitutional practice cautioned against over-hasty attempts to fashion the Constitution according to the convenience of the persons in power in the Government of the day. [...] On the other hand the memorandum of the Fedration of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry representing more or less the reaction of the average layman points out that the respect which the Contitution commands can be gravely impaired if every political party in power thought it could shape it to avoid all obstacles to its own purposes and adds that an amendment on the eve of the elec [...] It might be more to the point to explore the possibilities of an arrangement by which the Anglo-Iranian can act as the selling agency for the entire output reserving and earmarking a portion of the net profits payable towards the compesation for the value of the oil investments in Iran.
