1947 (2) Kathlisaritsägara genealogy.—There is a manuscript copy of the well-known work of Somadeva in the library of the Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal which like the manuscript of the Kavya must have been an heirloom of the Rewa House. [...] The expression of his malice against Buddhism and the Buddhists reaches its climax when he puts into the mouth of king Sudhanva the order to all his employees to kill all the Buddhists from the aged down to the children wherever come across from the Rama's Bridge 1 Read at the monthly meeting of the Pracyavani Delhi on 19th May 1946 under the presidency of Mr. [...] The composition and recital of the verse known as Nandi which is to precede Ratigadvara forms a part of the business of the actor or the stage-manager and as such are beyond the province of the dramatis1 Cp. [...] 1947 this is what Vikvanitha appears to establish on the authority of the dictum quoted above and also of Bharata.1 In support of his view of the Nandi having been composed and recited by actors and of its having had no connexion with the author of the drama ViAvan5.tha points out the practice resorted to by the ancient dramatists of introducing the opening verse of a drama after the direction ' [...] The history of the composition of the Nandi-verse and its gradual incorporation into the body of the drama may perhaps be traced in the following way:— Originally the Nandi-verse appears to have been a part of the Part/arc:Aga mentioned by Bharata; in fact it was the last stage of the Pilrvaratiga and consisted of an auspicious religious ceremony including the Nandi-gloka.
