Onward 23rd November 1933

Just after the last Census the Committee of the Indian Chamber of Commerce Calcutta estimated the number of uemployed in Bengal to be in the neighbouhood of 8 millions. [...] Neither can one agree that the decision of the Mahatma not to take part in any political questions for the next 11 months is in the best interests of the country especially as the political destiny is at the moment hanging in the balance and diverse questions affecting the10 ONWARD welfare of its people is daily emerging ot.tt of the melting-pot. [...] Such is the composition of the tribunal which sits in judgment over the fruits of the labours of the producer and his staff who also in fearful suspense await the verdict as to whether their efforts have succeeded or failed to impress the gods. [...] This audiencè judges not merely for itself but for the whole of the town nay the whole of the interested public who are primarily governed and influenced by the reports from First-Nikhlers "ONWARD 17 Savitri (East' India Film Co.). The second Bengali attempt on this subject is at the moment the centre of much attraction in the northern quarters of the city. [...] Perhaps the most glaring evidence of this which reveals itself to the dispassionate spectator is the undue emphasis which has been put by the Direction on the sex appeal" element in the piece and it seemed to me that in giving so great a prominence to this spurious feature they have sacrificed much of the picturesque beauty and poignancy embodied in the original story.
