[...] We had listened with suppressed pain to the stereotyped lectures in the posgraduate classes about provincial finance in the days of the Company—while England went off the gold standard the rupee was forcibly linked with the debased sterling while elsewhere the award of jute export duty and the allocation of income tax were fought and won and lost.
