As a result of the present investigations the above mechanism of the conversion of pedicin to pedicinin has found further support through the actual isolation of the intermediate bromo-derivative when the addition of brmine is carried out under the mild conditions noted in the experimental. [...] The decrease in the saponification value clearly shows that phenol in the presence of oxalic acid attacks the ethylenic linkages of the oil molecule. [...] The study involved the determination of the oil content and the vitamin A potency firstly of the two indivdual lobes and secondly of the different regions of the individual lobe. [...] 5 In view of the large differences in the mode of occurrence of oil and vitamin A in fish livers Sanford and co-workers pointed out that large errors might be introduced by taking any one part of the liver for test and recommended the disintegration of the whole liver by mincing as the best method of sampling.
