But it is brought into prominence when race possesses all the power and to the other is left only the consekt tion of a martyr when the former occupies the position of a ruler and the latter of the ruled. [...] And to the demonstrations of the labourer to the effect that the capital belongs to him really the capitalist is apt to listen as to the howling of a passing storm. [...] Let us imagine not that England is boasting of the brightest jewel in her crown but rather that in the inevitable clash of the West with the East England and India are picked out from air the rest to write a new chapter in the history of the world. [...] What prevents 112 from giving the same importance to a political crusade with a deeper intellectual significance deeper because the self-abnegating individualism of the East is to be fused with the self-realising socialism of the West ? Will the past instead of being an education for the future only bind the present to itself ? We admire the dash of the man who announces that he will tackle th [...] Why should we not admire the boldness of the man who announces that he will study the history of the world from a higher standpoint ? The West is not the arbiter of the destiny of the East but the agent who realises the destiny lain have fulfilled a higher aryl af nobler task than any so far accomplished in the world.
