In a cane of suttee (the only one) in the Rungpore district of Moorshedbad the muistrate committed for trial ell the parties concerned thinking that there wts rstrong saspiciort corroborated by the inability or refusal of the parties to explain that the o lect of the ceripoy was to get rid of the widow in order to secure song property left br the deceased to his brothers in the event. [...] could possess the fortitude to persist in her determinatiik unto the positive completion of the sacrifice and That the custim could merely exist in the casual infraction of these rules by the emplct ment of illegal means in the absenciliof Earopean superintendence: yet experience showed the contrary. [...] We were now however within fifty miles of the capital and the scene began greatly to improve: the country became level the nearest ranges of hills to the east being at least thirty miles distant an the Arracan mountains to the west not less than fifty in the nearest part and sixty or seventy in the distant. [...] After the audience the gentlemen of the mission were occupied forseveral successive days in paying visits to the heir apparent the Prince of Sarrawadi the Dowager Queen and the Queen's brother. [...] The botany of the new provinces to the south is considered to be highly novel and interesting combining in a great degree the characters of the Floras of continental India and the Malayan countries.
