to the Agricultural and Horticultural Society of India Metcalfe Hall Calcutta SIR —I have the to send you a memorandum on the suject of Cotton cultivation in this district drawn up at the request of the Secretary to the Cotton Supply Association and to beg the favor of your sending it after perusal to Messrs. [...] Usually the rains -afford sufficient moisture to ensure a moderate crop and the cultivators being for the most part very poor have not always the means and often not the will to give the trifing irrigation which I have pointed out as a necessary remedy for the occasional severe drought immediately after the commencement and at the close of the periodical rains. [...] In East Berar the soil is of all descriptions ; from the deepest black loam to the lightest red soil in the undulating Talooks to the South of the District. [...] The conservation of American seed for resowing shall have my attention but in West Berar the cultivators would appear to think the soil of the District unsuited to the growth of foreign cotton ; and in the Raichore Doab as the District has been restoed to the Nizam the experiment will die out unless European Sperintendence could be secured. [...] Reid thinks the local authorties can promote the culture of cotton will be to give the widest publicity to the immediate prospect of a considerable and permanent demand for the article and to afford every facility in their power to the enquiries of speculators and to the experiments of Lanholders with a view to the introduction or extension of the cultivtion of cotton in their respectiv
