The larva of this insect is the one referred to by Mr Simmons in his paper entitled " A Contribution to the Study of the Mango Weevil " read before the Society on the"298 A further Contribution to the 6th February last and published in the Journal* of the AgrHorticultural Society. [...] Examination with a " platyscopic lens shows that the brown mark is either a " longitudinal division of the viscera or is the heart of the "larva It is not a mark in the skin but a clear space " through which the motion of the viscera or the pulsation " of the heart can be seen. [...] The larva of the moth poesesses the characteristic caterpillar feet legs and pro-legs similar to those found in say the caterpillars which attack the lily The larva of the weevil has APO turbercles instead of feet Turning now to the mouth parts ; the larva of the Syrphid fly has two powerful hooks—mandibles we presume —and each of these is minutely serrated. [...] We know the appearance of the pupa cases of the two larva in question viz of the Syrphus fly and of the Micro-lepidopteron and we have seen that the pest which burrows into the seed of the mango is not the weevil but the larva of the Micro-lepidopteron. [...] Of the weevil itself we know that the greater portion of the life of its larva is passed in the fruit and that pupation occurs in the fruit and not in the ground the imago escaping"30 1 A further Contribution to the from the ripened fruit.
