Throughout the year we have carefullywatNed the prices of the more important salts in the leading marts of each of the districts of the Punjab the North-Western and Central Provinces and Oudh. [...] In considering as during the past year I have been compelled to do the various lines of traffic external and internal by which salt is supplied to the vast tracts throughout which the operations of our Department extend or which are directly affected by these the conviction has forced itself on me that so far as the supply of salt to the people at large and the development of commerce gene [...] Besides these the establishment for the salt revenue in the Punjab are those at the Kohat Salt Mines for the levy of a duty of 4 3 or 2 annas a maund on the consumption Trans-Indus and those in the Sindh Sanger Doab and Kalabagh mimics or the Shahpore salt range for the levy of a duty of Rs. [...] It is impossible to doubt such a mass of concurrent testimony opposed as it is to all the traditions of the Department and to the opinions which relying on my personal investigations from the beaks of the Sutlej to the junction of the Jumna and Chumbul I last year recorded. [...] QUANTITY of Salt which paid Duty and Length of Line in each Division of the Punjab Sectiqn of the Customs Line in each year since the formation of the division.
