THE ROLE OF THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS IN WORLD SOCIETY In the previous lecture' in this series I attempted to trace the growth of international co-operation before the War with a View to emphasizing the fact that the League of Nations which was founded in 1920 was not cut out of whole cloth but was a continuation of a process which began as long ago as the middle of the nineteenth century. [...] The experience of a whole half-century had pointed the road to be taken in the extension of government in the new world community and the tragedy of the War had fastened attention on the need for that extension in such a way as to make the necessary departures possible.
