The Calcutta Review an Illustrated Monthly (Third Series) September 1936

1936

The chorus sings of a wind blowing in the back hills and of the crows beginning to cloak and ends with the words: " There's none of the shower we heard ? What remains there this morn is only the sound of the whipering pine." The characters of the play three in all withdraw behind the curtain. [...] And what use is the Vo hall if one cannot drop the curtain in one's imagination ? I have had occasion before to associate the No hall with the tea-room where through the fragrance of tea the melody of the boiling kettle and the curl of incense one will surely enter the twilight land of the unknowable. [...] The lines which the actors sing or more properly recite loudly with the alternation of the chorus of course take the main part in creating the beautiful effect of the scene. [...] The history of these is largely the history of by far the greater part of the human race and the history of the Aryan Branch of Indo-European embraces the history cultural and intellectual of the people of India. [...] Ile touches upon the inter-relation of the inscriptional Prakrit3 and the problcin of the home dialect of Pali and of the origin of the Mixed Sanskrit " of the Buddhists.
