In these pages I wish to give the matter-of-fact daily life of an average Roman from the days of the early Republic to the closing days of the Empire that is to say from the reputed foundation of Rome (20th Aprils 753 B. C.) to its fall (87 A. D.) and the close of the Republican period followed by the establishment of the First Triumvirate of Caesar Pompey and Crassus (60 A. D.) down to the ren [...] In the first epoch while the foundation of the Republic was laid and the sanctity Of Rome proclaimed to the inhabitants of the Pr*inces the Roman citizen bad a character and led a life of which only a very general and crude delineation is for want of material possible. [...] The people lived in Rome promiscuously; there was no area assigned to one class the rich and the poor the Patricians and the Plebians jostled in no set area and we find today as did those who lived in the age of itsTHE CALCUTTA REVIEW tour ancient history one magnificent palatial house surrounded by the modest tenements of the artizan the barber and the astrologer. [...] Four such courts held their session at the same time with the result that the thunder of a defending counsel often filled the vast ball and drowned the controversies in the other chambers the judges and the spectators of which gladly turned to hear the declamation of a popular counsel whose popularity was enhanced by the uproarious applause of the hired spectators. [...] Take the noble hymn of affirmation beginning with the lines All things affirm Thee in living the bird in the sir Both the hawk and the finch ; the beast on the earth Both the wolf and the lamb. Even in us the voice of seasons The snuffle of Winter the song of Spring The drone of Summer the voices of beasts And of birds praise Thee.
