The area under jute was curtailed during the period 1931-37 because of the slump in the prices the depression of the jute industry resulting from the world economic crisis of 1929-33 and a campaign for the voluntary restriction of jute in 19:35. [...] All the European members and the I. C. S. member and Secretary of the Fawcus Committee in Chapter VII-B of the Report said that the estimate of the (European) Bengal Chamber of Commerce of the average cost of production was Rs. [...] This was pointed out clearly by the majority of the Fawcus Committee in 19:39 when on page 72 of the report it:was stated that the Indian Jute Mills Association who have been controlling the policy of pricing the jute do not look to the interests of the jute growers." In this connection the attention of the reader may be drawn to„the following extract from a note contributed by Mr. [...] The correspondence which passed between its Secretary a member of"1944] THE INDIAN VIEW OF THE JUTE INDUSTRY 9 the Indian Civil Service and the Association and which. appears on pages 161-164 of the first volume of the report shows the unwillingness or rather the refusal of the latter to supply relevant data of the matter so much so that Messrs. [...] Thus one of the basic factors of this type of land economy will be affected: no longer the members of the joint family can overlook the difference in the area of their shares in the land of the family.
