It was stated—with what justice we are not in a position to decide—that the truth or falsehood of the charge was beyond the issue ; that the sufficiency of the reply did not concern the question ; that the essence of privilege lay in the nature of the charge itself. The obliquity of many towers in Italy has been caused by the settling of the ground. [...] I left Florence at night and the next morning I was in Rome " the Niobe of Nations " the " Mother of Dead Empires." I could scarcely believe that I was in that ancient city the mistress of the ancient world the wonder of the modern world ! I could scarcely believe I was treading the path along which Vestal Virgins walked twenty-five centuries ago that I was standing on the ruins of the edifice
