Soon after a good deal of fighting took place in the Carnatic among the powerful chiefs of the time who with the aid of the two powers of Europe the French and the English carried on a protracted war. With the accession of the Muhamedan power their purse was taxed a little more and the introduction of the Zemindari system by Raja Todur Mal not only deprived them of their just and immemorial rights in the land but it also enhanced the revenue in the [...] 65 doubt not that even the most staunch apologist of government would blush to admit the reasonableness of the policy which has deprived the ryot of all iris interest in the land and which carries with a silver spoon all the fruits of his labour to the mouth of a whole race of middleman just above him while he is left to starve.
