1947

In the report of the Coalfields' Committee (1946) it is stated that strongly caking Gondwana coals are confined mainly to the Jharia and Giridih fields and to a part of the Laikdih and the Ramnagar seams of limited portions of the western half of the Raniganj field ; the Jharia field is by far the most important. [...] Referring to the caking seams of the Barakar measures one might for the sake of argument assume on a priori gelogical grounds that the seams originally continued in thickness and in quality to the dip below the higher measures (the Barren Measures and the Raniganj series) of the soutwestern part of the Jharia basin. [...] The oveburden covering the Barakar coal seams at their deepest point of burial in the centre of the Jharia basin of the south-western part of the coalfield will be of the order of 4 000 feet in the case of seam No. [...] In the case of the lower (Raniganj) field we have the very extensive deposits of a much wider Damodar river in the south together with those of the Adjai river in the north-east and to a lesser extent the Barakar to the west. [...] Mention of gold in India has been made in the Rigveda Brahmanas the Sutras and Puranas in the Mahabharata and Ramayana in the Hebrew Scriptures and in the writings of Herodotus Megasthenes Ptolemy Pliny and others The source of the enormous quantities of gold stated to have been found in India has been the subject of much speculation.
