And what about their opinions characters and achieve ments ? What they regard as the supremacy of the intellect I think frequently proves the opposite and the reverse the fact is is it not ? that they cannot change the real course of humanity and love through the intellectual. [...] At the close of one of the greatest of the novels Hardy himself falls into this mistake when he says speaking of the death of Tess : The President of the Immortals had ended his sport with Tess." This reflection surely suggests that human lives are the subject-matter of a comedy to the Immortals. [...] For the understanding of the philosophical significance of the drama it is essential to realise that to the Spirit of the Years—mere scientific intelligence— the passion of the Pities and the ironic delight of the Ironies are alike incomprhensible. [...] The Pities and the Ironies fulfil this function and to the end they must fail to understand the passionless attitude of the Spirit of the Years. [...] It is dramatically fitting that in this concluding scene the last word should remain with the Ironic Spirit and the Chorus of the Pities who each reply to the summing up of the Years It is true that " Old Years " himself is moved to ask the question.
