According to a statement made by the Secretary of State for Burma in the House of Commons on the 1st April 1941 the British Government has agreed to provide funds to build a railway line from the railhead at Lashio to the frontier which will link up the Burma railway system with that of China. [...] On the question of extending the Burma Railways from Lashio to the frontier Goverment has maintained the view that Burma is not a wealthy enough country to undertake the risk of loss to the tax payer which would be entailed by the construction and maintenance of a line the revenue earning prospects of which within a considerable period of years are not yet clearly established but that if thi [...] Advantages from the increase in the volume of trade with China and in the traffic over the Burma Railways system will therefore accrue to Burma without the counterbalancing financial liability which generally attends the opening of a new line of railway or the risk of other results prejudicial to our interests."100 BURMA TRADE JOURNAL. [...] In connection with the new Trade Agreement the following statement was made by the Hon'ble U Ba Than in the House of Representatives on the 7th April :- The members of this House will have received from statements which have appeared in the Press some idea of the nature of the new Trade Agreement which was successfully negotiated at New Delhi recently between the delegates of India and Burma. [...] It will be some time before the drafting of the formal agreement can be completed but the members of the two delegations signed on Thursday April 3 a statement containing the heads of agreement reached on the several points which arose in the course of the discussions.
