Sabuj Patra, one of the most popular literary monthlies of colonial Bengal, first appeared in 1321 B.S. (1914). Edited by Pramatha Chaudhury, the journal published novels, short stories, poems, essays and commentaries. Contributors included Rabindranath Tagore, Pramatha Chaudhury, Surendranath Dasgupta, Satyendranath Dutta, Priyanath Sen, and Brajendranath Seal.

Sabuj Patra serialized one of Rabindranath’s famous novels, Ghare Baire (The Home and the World), which depicted his views about gender and domesticity as well as his critique of extremist nationalism. Rabindranath also wrote poems, essays and commentaries for the journal. Pramatha Chaudhury wrote the essays ‘Arya Dharmer Sahit Bahya Dharmer Jogajog’ (The Relationship between Aryan Religion and the Outer Religion), ‘Arya Sabhyatar Sahit Banga Sabhyatar Jogajog’ (The Relationship between Aryan Culture and Bengali Culture), ‘Bartaman Banga Sahitya’ (Contemporary Bengali Literature), and book reviews. Other articles included Subodh Chattopadhyay’s ‘Chatrer Patro’, a critique of the contemporary education system, Prafulla Kumar Chakraborty’s discussion of ‘new philosophy’ (Navya Darshan) and Birbal’s ‘new ideas of education’.
