It is the positive (or _negative) arterio-venous sugar differenee* especially after a glucose menu Whi.(1r really counts because as has been fully explained later in the text this gi yes us the real indication of the rate of.utilization of sugar in the tissues the degree of defect of which naturally determines the severity of the diabetes. [...] The technique of the glucose tolerance test was the usual one except that both the capillary (arterial) blood from the puncture of the finger pad and the venous blood drawn from the cubital vein were obtained simultaneously before and at regular intervals after the administration of 50 g. of dextrose. [...] The explantion of this appears to be due to the fact that during this relatively resting stage of carbohydrate metabolism the liberation of glucose from the glycogen store-house of the liver as well as the storage and oxidization of glucose in the tissues proceed in such a slow uniform and continuous manner that the sugar content of the blood entering the tissues (arterial) and that leaving [...] The author would like to mention however that though the determination of the arterio-venous sugar difference in severe cases of diabetes in the fasting ' state may give us some idea as to the severity of the disease a much more definite and clear idea as to the nature and severity of diabetes is obtained by studying the arterio-venous sugar difference after a glucose meal.8 Arterio-1 enous Sug [...] In the table given below (Table III) the effect of ingestion of 50 grammes of glucose on the simultaneous sugar content of the arterial and the venous blood in healthy normal subjects was studied.
