The cells of this tissue arise embryonically from the mesenchyme and in their widespread distribution throughout the adult animal comprise the blood and lymph the reticular tissues of the myeloid and lymphatic organs the loose connective tissue associated with the skin and various organs the dense connective tissue such as is found classically in the derma of the skin the regular connective tiss [...] This system embraces the active macrophages or resting-wandering cells of the connective tissue in general; the primitive cells which can become transformed directly into macrophages such as the outstretched perivascular mesenchymal cells of connective tissue; the reticular cells of the lymphatic and myeloid tissues in the red pulp of the spleen; and the various littoral cells lining the venous [...] Normally only the two smaller sizes occur in the circulating blood and of these the medium lymphocyte of the tissues is the so-called large lymphocyte of the blood but sometimes as for example in malaria the true large lymphocyte of the tissues is found in the blood stream. [...] The large blood vessels of the liver are lined with typical endothelium but the sinusoids which separate the liver-cell cords and which carry the blood from the branches of the periportal vein surrounding the liver lobules to the central vein of the lobule are lined with cells similar in their developmental potencies to the reticular cells lining the venous sinuses of the spleen and to the ou [...] The consistence and pigmentation of the spleen in simian malaria varies with the species of monkey the type of infection and the history of the case.
