Thus the greater the divergence in the number of deaths recorded in the two diet groups the greater is the inclination to associate this differenc6 to the difference in diets. [...] Any method of assessing numerically the significance to be ascribed to the results shoultake care not only of the divergence in the recorded percentage of responses but also of the number of animals on which the test was carried but. [...] The higher the value of x2 the greater is the chance that the difference in the two responses possesses significance i.e. [...] Can this amount of divergence in the distributions occur from pure chance or is it to be regarded as statistically signifying the effect of some other factor say the difference in the diets of the two groups ? We may calculate the probability; o the odds of the occurrence of the above distrbution of figures by pure chance. [...] The rule for ascertaining the degrees of freedom for a contingency table of any size is as follows :— Subtract one from the number of rows and one from the number of columns of the contingency table and find the product of these two figures.
