The basis of the whole method is a thorough study of the diameter increment put on by trees during the whole of their lives since this increment represents the result of both the spotaneous and solicited effort on the part of the forest. [...] This classification into small middle-sized and large groups is made with the idea of judging the composition of the crop and is also useful in the interpretation of the calculation of the increment and in the markings for fellings. [...] (I) The Estimate o/ the Possibility and the Plan of Exploitlion.—Having arrived at a knowledge of the increment what use can one make of it ? flow can one thereby deduce what is necessary and useful to know for managing the forest of the future ? In this matter the method of control adopts a special definition of the possibility in that for controlists the posibility has only the restricted [...] The more adverse the local conditions of scil and climate the greater must he the attention devoted to the protection of the site and the establishment of the plantation. [...] In Bengal the best time for planting the end of May or the beginning of June fur localities above 5 oco feet the middle of June up to the middle of July in the middle and foot hills and the same period in the plains except that it is safe there to plant up to the end of August.
