The Indian Forester July 1878

1878

In 1876 he contributed to the Journal of the Asiatic Society a paper on the Vegetation of the Nicobars based chiefly upon the collections made by the Austrian Naturalists attached to the Novara Expedition. [...] Hundreds of these are made in the wood of each tree in the course of a few years and cannot heal under any circumstances ; but a layer of wood is formed over the injured part at the expense of the bark and general vitality of the tree. [...] Three were observed the base of the trunks of which were flooded to a height of one foot yet the roots seemed to run up tothe brow of the bank and no matted rootlets were observed as is the case with the willow tree when growing on the margin of a rivulet. [...] If the yield of milk from a tree is great two rows of cups are put on at once the one as high as can be reached and the other at the surface of the ground and_ in the course of working the upper rcar descending daily six or eight inches while the lower one ascends the same distance 'both rows in a few days come together. [...] There is always a great deal of negro-head " the result of the distance the milk has to run and to the large quantity of clay employed in the process.
