[...] All the same the Government is quite conscious of the iportance of museums and the role they can play in the growth and development of visual education of the masses and in raising their cultural standards. [...] It is not genrally known that in the beginning of the 19th century the classical scholars of the day opposed the acquisition of the Elgin Marbles by the British Museum and blackguarded Lord Elgin for what is now universally acknowledged to have been an act of foresight and pulic service. [...] The publication of much wanted guides to the exhibits of the mineral galleries was also undertaken and the following are some of the important publications: (1) 'Popular guide to the minerals in the geological collections in the Indian Museum' by F. R. Mallet (1879). [...] It is the largest in Asia and on account of the number variety beauty and rarity of the specmens one of the most important in the world.
