And in the 18th century when all their precious heritage was but a thing of the past the descendants of the giant Hindus of old stood amazed at the gorgeous display of the English theatre the first of which the Old Playhouse at Lalbazar was established in Calcutta even before the siege of Calcutta in 1756. [...] The drama abounds with realistic pictures of the tyranny of the European indigo-planters over the illiterate and ovepatient peasantry of Bengal and like the famous Uncle Tom's"THE BENGALI STAGE AND THE BENGALI DRAMA 111 Cabin in America rendered a groat service to Bengal in abolising the vicious system of forced labour from the indigo-planting zone. [...] In the history of the Bengali Stage the day marked the beginning of a new era which completely removed the amateur character of the Bongali theatre. [...] The prosperity of the one was the prosperity of the other and the adversity of one was the adversity of the other. [...] The subtleties of the question involved in the separation of the judiciary from the executive which is so necessary in India may elude the grasp of his illiterate mind.
