In recent years the decisions of the Courts have substantially displaced the provisions of the dhammathats as the principal source of modern Burmese Buddhist law and the number of such dcicsions is now it is believed sufficient to justify an attempt to state the principles of the law upon the basis of such decisions. [...] At the same time it must be admitted that with the possible exception of Coleridge none of them has bestowed any deep thought on the theme or the meaning of the great poem though it is as intriguing as the story of the evolution of the poem or the subtleties of its prosody. [...] It is true that in the last Books of the epic the daemonic energy of the first portion of the poem is subdued and " converted into a stoical resistance ". From this Professor Tillyard concludes that " the pessimism causes a change of tone and impairs the unity of the poem." But why ? Is it not rather the other way about ? As Satan is to Adam so is the"THE THEME OF PARADISE LOST' 9 spirit of the [...] The current year (1940) consequently marks the sexcentenary of the birth of the poet * " the morning-star of English song" the father of English poetry and the first national poet of England. [...] Out of the three the Midland speech was destined to be supreme in the hands of Chaucer because it was the dialect of London and of the two great Universities and of men of business.
