The new records are the despatches written not in Persian but in the Rajasthani form of Hindi by the officers of Kumar Ram Singh the host and care-taker of Shivaji to the diwan of the Jaipur kingdom at Amber. [...] Bearing this definition clearly in mind and remembering the extant records in the Persian language even in relation to Maratha history the position of the materials in the Marathi tongue has been thus stated by me :— Not only is there a striking contrast between the wealth of contemporary documents in Persian and English that illuminate the history of the Marathas under the Peshwas and the compa [...] The politiCal papers of the Peshwas' Daftar will have to be supplemented and completed by adding to them documents of the same time now to be found in the family archives of the Purandares and the Chandrachuds — of which 3 and 2 volumes respectively have been already published and a few from the records of the families of other former high officers. [...] For the international relations of that age with uniuersitias as still the largely prevailing idea there was on the one hand the practice of reference to the dual authority of the Emperor and the Pope and on the other hand to the spirit of cosmopolitanism as expressed through the Catholic diurch and the institution of chivalry. [...] This struggle was a potent political fact of the 15th and the 16th centuries of Europe and the Crown everywhere became the symbol on one hand of the unity and the independence of the country-state and rallying-point for all elements supporting reason law and order and on the other hand of revolting against internal anarchism and against enslavement under foreign and sacerdotal influences.
