The various scenes of his communion with nature are not simply of the nature of spiritual revelations of baptismal baths which cleanse and purify the spirit ; they are also the records of the imprint of the fiery finger of romanticism an indication of the eternal glow that kept burning in the poet's heart underlying the external staidness and frigidity of his manners. [...] This moral sense is borne in upon him in shudderings and tremblings of the spirit in sudden flashes of spiritual insight and not in words of the commandment and maxims of copybook morality in a manner more akin to the burning of the bush and the peal of thunder than to the cold-blooded codification of the Mosaic law. [...] There is first a minute observation of the ripples and lines caused on the surface of the water by the rowing with an eye sharpened by the keen feeling of joy ; then secondly a sudden apprehension of the romance of the entire situation a mist of romantic ideality thrown over the elfin pinnace gliding under the canopy of the stars and the grey sky as if by means of magic ; and lastly the tra [...] This association of the deepest feelings of the poet with the sublime aspects of Nature purifies the elements of thought and feeling down to the very root and makes even the animal dance and flow of the blood a source of sublimity. [...] The romantic bent of the poet's mind appears in his description of the beauty of the islands which formed the goal of the boat-race and specially in his reference to the ruined shrine which was a stock subject of romance in the newborn craze after romanticism.
