In these two works the treament of English grammar was revolutionised it was no longer cast in the mould of Latin grammars but the complete difference between the AnglSaxon tongue and Latin was recognised in the framing of the rules of its use and the history of its growth. [...] Wholesale borrowings from Sweet and Skeat and the adaptation of the new information to the needs and capacity of Indian boys made the new edition of Rowe's Hints a powerful factor in imposing and modernising the teaching of English grammar and idiom in Bengal schools. [...] The passed students who flocked to the Presidency College to the full capacity of the class-rooms used to rush up or down the staircase in a tumultuous horde to occupy the best benches in the classes of those famous professors and 'the sight shook Mr. [...] Kant's first categorical imperof the Gandhian way ; and we shall see why we call this Ahithsa ". "Greater Ahirhs5.." The doctrine of "Ahirhsa" belongs to the hoary past of India to the Maluibhäratit the Rcimilyana the Gita and the Upanishads. [...] This consoling contradiction between the principles professed and their practice is the greatest weakness of the case."* Such is the width and vision of Gandhiji's Ahirhsa '. And the apparent crudity and medieval tinge of his ideas must be revised in the context of the type of society Gandhiji had been aiming at viz.
