[...] Near by was built a Buddhist monastery of which some part of the ruins may be seen in Plate VII with the stupa beyond and in the centre of this stood the noble polished pillar (Plate VIII) crowned by the four lions with the Wheel of the Law in the centre. [...] I find myself taking but little time to enter into the spirit of my work for within a month of my arrival I became President of the C. H. College and School Debating Sciety and of the Lawn-Tennis Association while I presided at all the meetings of the Boarders' Union until the end of the session. [...] Societies for practical usefulness like the Sons and Daughters of India—in which school boys and girls can be unpl«Iged members—offer good training-grounds for the future citizens ; the protection of animals kindness to all the helping of the very young and of the aged— one of these forms the band of union in other associations.
