Indian Sugar May 1952

1952

He gave a patient and sympathetic hearing to the members and appreciated the seriousness of the situation in view of the expected carry-over of 5 lakh tons of sugar at the end of the year. [...] A readjustment of the export and import policy in the light of these conditions was therefore called for and the present balance of payment position demanded that full advantage should be taken of the productive capacity of the country. [...] Scepticism was however expressed as to its advantages over the plate and frame presses some of the criticisms being (i) recirculation of muddy juice (ii) greater fall in purity of the filtrates of the Oliver than in the filtration of the plate and frame presses (iii) greater quantity of wash water required in the Oliver as compared to plate and frame presses etc. [...] In view of the above an attempt was made by us of a close study of the working of these filters in India during the course of our visits to some of the factories in the Deccan. [...] The rise in the level in the receiver tank may be due to the fact that the filtrate pump is not drawing the filtrate as fast as it collects in the receiver.
