Swarms of the nymphal and adult stages of this insect cause fading and drying of the leaves the result being a loss of sugar in the plant. [...] It the Engineers and Chemists would analyse bagasse issuing from the two sides of the rollers—the pintle side and the tail side—they would find that the bagasse from the pintle side of the top-discharge rollers contains more sugar than the bagasse issuing from the tail side. [...] It is further related to the designing of the furnaces the cobustion chamber and the flue passages as also to coposition of the flue gases in respect of CO2 and CO. [...] The balance is stored in the stem in the form of sugars and consequently the process of ripening in sugarcane is largely governed by the rate at which carbohydrates are synthesized and utilised.
