[...] The press and the influence of Western literature are responsible to a large extent for present literary activities in Bengal ; while the idea of individual liberty or social non-interference in the spiritual growth of an individual lies at the root of the lack of moral support from which the caste-system is suffering at the present time. [...] A.] On the auspicious day of the Bengali New Year in the month of April 1889 a small band of young men celebrated the inaugration ceremony of the Aryan Club on the small plot of land at the time known as the Pantir Math" on the Shampuker section of North Calcutta. [...] Even after the downfall of Vijaynagar the country did not pass entirely into the bands of the Muhammadans buf remained in the hands of Hindu chiefs called Polygais and of such Hindu royal houses as the Pandyas and Nayaks of Madura and later on of the Mahratta Rajahs of Tanjore and the Woodeyar Rallis of Mysore. [...] Then by the time that the Mughal Empire reached its greatest extent the Mahrattas rose in the South and the Sikhs and Jats in the North and in the course of half a century established their rule which lasted until the time of the British conquest over the greater portion of the country.
