Three sets of forces faced him in the first half of the twenties: (a) the rising tide of Indian industrial capi:aism and the feeling of resenment at the denial of its 'ntural' scope of expansion by Brtish interests; (b) the mounting Hindu-Muslim rivalries which the British policy of separate electorates in particular had fostered; and (c) the sympathy of Indian Muslims for the vanishe [...] The poverty and want of edcation as well as the exclusivness of the Hindus succeeded in creating a feeling of inferiority among the Mussalmans of the province. [...] With the formation of Pakistan the Mussalman has apparently been relieved of a certain psydhological feeling of oppression and this is testified to by the feeling of joy and the new devotion to a State which stands as a symbol of the feeling of cultural freedom. [...] Yet the poverty of the masses remains very nearly the same in spite of the relief in the sphere of the mind. [...] It is above all the colour of the cap which by the mere process of being put on the head gives the wearer the status of the elect.
