The meger of the railways involves inevitably the integration of the services. [...] His position today is coparable to his position in 1942 when he made a desperate effort to get rid of the British in spite of the taunts from certain quarters that the dparture of the British might mean a conquest of the coutry by the Japs or the Gemans. [...] The theory is that the higher your icome the less should you be compensated for falls in the value of money—and since the cost of living has risen by some 300% since the begising of the century this has meant a progressive decline in the differential between the pay of Mr. [...] To it were summoned not only members of the cabnet but also leaders of the trade union and co-operative movement and for a long week-end in the beauty of the Surrey countryside they fought another battle in the struggle that has been going on inside the party itself. [...] The two suggestions are that a general election should be provoked by a bold pursuit of socialist objectives which would inpire the electorate with the same idealism that motivated them in 1945 or that the fears of the doubters should be calmed by a demonstration of the fact that the Labour Party is not essentially socialist after all and can be relied upon to manage a capitalist state in a
