The following are some of the recommendations made by the Quran for the general improvement of the social condition of the slaves : (1) Be good to parents and to the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the neighbour and the companion in a journey and the wayfarer and those whom your right hands kossess!' (2 : 177.) (3) According to Abu Horeira the Prophet sa [...] Let"20 THE REVIEW OF RELIGIONS January it be understood that the fact whether the slave was fit to enter into a contract of the above character with his master was to be decided by the State and not the master as also the amount of the money to be paid and the manner and the timlimit of its payment. [...] In support of the contention that the making of the contract referred to above did not depend on the choice or pleasure of the owner of the slave but upon the State the following incident may be quoted. [...] The Anniversary opened on the morning of the 26th December with recitation from the Holy Quran and a short but exhilarating speech by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II in which he explained to the audience the growing importance of the Community and the part it was increasingly playing in the moral and religious development of India in particular and the whole of humanity in general.
