During the ninth month of the first year of the period King-gun of Joui-tsoung (711 A. D.) the kingdom of Southern India sent an ambassador offering as tribute some products of the country During the sixth moon of the second year of the period Sian-Mt-an of Youan-thsoung (713 A. D.) the kingdom of Southern India sent an ambasador to the court offering tribute. [...] His very exalted Majesty the Emperor and all the persons of the court repaired to the balcony of the Imperial gate to see them arrive." The same work goes on to state"—" During the eighth moon of the second year of the period Kai-youan (714 A. D.) the kingdom of Western India sent an ambassador offering some products of the country. [...] During the fifth moon of the fifth year of the period Kai-youan (717 A.a) the king of Central India sent some ambassadors to the 2. As in our previous articles on the subject the English renderings of the -passages quoted from Ma-touan-lin's work and from the Pian-i-tian have been made by the present writer from the French translations by M. Julien in the Journal Asialique (1847) and by 1\J. [...] The absence of frequent commercial expeditions to China for the greatei part of this period was due no doubt to the anarchy which prevailed in that country during the later years of the rule of the Tang dynasty and before the accession to the Chinese throne of the great Emperors of the Sung dynasty in 964. [...] Observes Captain F. Brinkley in his monumental work on China : Towards the end of the ninth century when the empire lapsed into a state of anarchy preceding the fall of the Tang rulers the various factories established by foreign traders had to be closed with the exception of Canton ; and throughout the greater part of the tenth century—that is to say the period separating the fall of the Tang
