SECTION TIIIRTIETII In the pre-Christian centuries the dynamic power of both Brahmaical and Buddhistic civilisations in the island of Ceylon as well as in the mainland had shown itself as we have seen in our last article of this series in the institution of hospitals and despensaries for the relief of the sick and the infirm. [...] From this silent background India calls us to the Cult of the Spirit calls the mighty nations of the Earth to lay down their pride and hate their scepters and swords " And again in another part of the same Address :—" It is neither the inexorable pitiless oracle of Science nor the siren lure of commerce neither the blandishments of a sense-born Art nor the feverish Hope of a hunger-born Soci [...] So also in the case of the hospitals and dispensaries ; for under the re ;iuur of Buddhism efforts to relieve physical suffering both of man and beast were distinctly laid down as necessary to the cultivation of the higher religious spirit and as coducive also to the acquisition of religious merit ; and the establishment of hospitals and dispensaries " the planting of " medicinal herbs '' [...] And he took care to dis cern the different wants of the sick and caused the physicians to minister to them as seemed necessary both by day and night."
