The late Queen Victoria the Good after the part that Her Majesty took in drafting the Royal Proclamation of 1858 felt more -and more drawn towards India and towards the close of the sixties of the last century Her Majesty was in a position to sanction the visit of her second son Prince Alfred the Duke of Edinburgh to this country. To (" to enable Her Most Gracious Majesty to make an addition to the Royal Style and Titles appertaining to the Imperial Crown of the United Kingdom and its Dependencies ") was the chief business of the session of 1876 —the then Prime Minister the late Earl of Beaconsfield taking all necessary steps to secure the pasing of the Bill. [...] The attachment which the Duke had conceived for India during the days of his service in this country found a striking expression in his speech on the occsion of the State Banquet on the night of the Delhi Coronation Durbar of 1903 where his Royal Highness was present as we have said as the representative of the Royal Family. [...] The Duke of Connaught was followed by the late Duke of Clarence and Avondale then Prince Albert Victor and second in line of succession to the Crown being the eldest son of His late Majesty Edward VII whose visit to India during the Viceroyalty of Lord Landowne was the occasion of a marked display of loyalty and rejoicing throughout the country. [...] In countries professing demcratic sentiments and governed on democratic principles the will of the People reigns supreme ; and the allegiance which the Sovereign pays to the voice of the People is a necessary incident of his position as part of the Governmental system.
